Lyle D. Porter went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 22, 2018 while at the Vibra Hospital, San Diego, California. He was a beloved son, husband, father and grandfather. Lyle was kind, compassionate, and full of zest for life that often led to a smile and a joke with family and friends. He was staunchly patriotic, a member of The American Legion; a lover of God and country.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; son, Kevin, daughter-in-law, Elena; daughter, Pamela Pettigrew and son-in-law, Bill; step-son, Mark Quinn; grandchildren, Sarah Pettigrew, Kate and Andrew Lyle Porter; he was a loving mentor and “pop-pop” to Troy and Hannah Herr, and Allyn and Colin Hawthorne. Lyle also is survived by beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lyle was born on August 17, 1936 in Ackley, Iowa to the late Guy and Hazel Porter. He was the youngest of five sons. Lyle served in the United States Marine Corps, and was a member of the Marine Corps Band as a saxophone player. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, majoring in business, and was a member of the UNI Alumni Association.
Lyle retired in 1998 from ITT Financial Services as executive salesman. He loved spending time with family and friends; loved to read, travel, listen to music and attend concerts. He also enjoyed watching all sports. He was often heard singing “I Did it My Way”.
Lyle will be missed and is forever in our hearts. After a private service with military honors, he will be interred at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association.
