It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Auriel Shantra El Miel, age 73, on April 18,
2025, at her daughter’s home in San Diego.
Born Lynette Nakamura on October 19, 1951, Auriel grew up with her parents and brother in Maui,
Hawaii. She graduated from Honolulu Business College in 1971 before moving to San Diego, where
she began a new chapter of her life as a mother. Over a span of 30 years living on both coasts
(California and Florida), Auriel worked as a dedicated massage therapist, bringing comfort and
healing to many.
In her retirement and throughout her life, Auriel found joy in a variety of hobbies and interests. She
was an avid traveler, exploring places as far as Japan, Egypt, Machu Picchu, and New Zealand. Closer
to home, she also embarked on countless road trips across the United States, often accompanied by
her children. Auriel’s artistic talents shined through in a wide variety of creative pursuits. She was
especially known for her intricate handmade cards. She was also a passionate dancer, enjoying both
country line dancing and lindy hop swing. When not dancing, she could be found tending to her lush
garden, where vibrant herbs, flowers, and tropical plants thrived. She had a deep love for movies,
and many knew her as a frequent visitor to the local theater, always eager to catch the latest film on
the big screen.
Auriel is survived by her son, Adam, and partner, Jessica; her daughter, Tori, and partner, James; her
brother, Dennis, and wife, Marsha; her nieces, Rachel, Leah, and Sarah; and many cousins. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Shigeyoshi Nakamura and Tomie Nakamura.
Though small in stature, Auriel’s spirit was truly larger than life. She made an impression on
everyone she met with her warm heart, sly sense of humor, and passion for life. Auriel was deeply
proud of her children and cherished time spent with family. She was always up for an adventure,
and always brought enough homemade lumpia for a village. Auriel will be greatly missed by all those
who were touched by her joy and generosity.
