Catherine Mitchell Obituary

Born to John and Florence Deegan in San Bernardino, California, Katie passed away on January 18 after a brief illness.  Max Mitchell, her husband of 63 years preceded her passing in 2022.  She is survived by her brother John Deegan, and her four children: Jeff (Jana), Jerry (Kelly). Jennifer, and Jonathan (Melissa).  Katie leaves behind a legacy of six grandchildren, Deegan, Katelyn (Carson), Kourtney (Kyle), Jacob, Chance, and Cadence, as well as one great-grandchild, Enella.

Raised in San Bernadino, Katie attended St Bernadine’s Catholic Schook K-12, where she excelled in sports and served as a cheerleader and synchronized swimmer.  She and Max were 19 years old when they met and married at 20.  Devoted to her family, Katie was an excellent cook, seamstress, and made countless sacrifices to attend and support her children’s various sports events.

Katie dedicated 37 years to Valley Center Schools, starting as a bus driver and rising to the position of Director of Transportation.  She formed lasting friendships with colleagues and cherished the bonds she made with bus drivers, teachers, administrators, principals, and superintendents.

Upon retirement, Katie expressed her love for her job and the children she served, emphasizing her commitment to their safety.  Outside of work, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafts, swimming, hiking, attending sporting events and traveling.  Katies strong faith in God guided her throughout her life, leading women’s ministries and heading the bereavement team for over 17 years.

Her family affectionately remembers her as a beloved wife, mom, grandma, nana, mom-sicle, and GG.  They are comforted knowing she has embraced her heavenly father’s waiting arms and is watching over them.  May she rest in peace.
