Claire Miller Obituary

Claire Miller, 96, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She has lived at the Remington Club in Rancho Bernardo since 2018. Born and raised in West Orange, New Jersey. She graduated from West Orange High School in 1945 and upon graduation worked as the lead administrator for West Orange Junior High School until she married her high school sweetheart Richard ‘Dick’ Miller in 1951. She often reminisced about the many summers she spent with her family and friends on the New Jersey shore as a young girl. Dick graduated with the Class of 1950 from the Naval Academy and Claire fully embraced her new role as Navy wife. They went on to build a life and family together, raising three sons. Claire was an exemplary Navy wife, mother, and was respected and loved by those who knew her. Her strength of character and perseverance embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit and unending care and passion for her family.

Claire adapted well to the rigors of being a military wife. She guided her family through many moves, deployments and challenges of Navy family life. Her family lived two years in places such as Virginia Beach, Virginia; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Boston, Massachusetts; Monterey, California; Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone; and Cornwall, England before relocating to the next duty station. She was extremely organized and always made moving an adventure. As a Navy spouse to a Vice Admiral, Claire was very committed to the success of his career and also very active in the military community during her husband’s 42 year career. She organized many wives support activities during deployments and worked tirelessly for the welfare of young military families playing an active role in the Navy League. She loved to travel and excelled in many sports including golf, bowling and especially walking.

After her husband retired from the Navy, they returned to Monterey, California and enjoyed an active retirement with many friends, annual trips to Lake Tahoe, extensive international travel, taking in the arts in Monterey and many Bay area sporting events.

Claire was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Miller in 2016 and is survived by her oldest son Rick Miller (Melinda) of Pompano Beach, Florida, grandchildren Christine (Mark) and Bradley. Middle son Ron Miller (Kathy) of Queensbury, NY, grandchildren Robert (Kelli), Daniel (Diana) and Caroline (Sean). Youngest son Tim Miller (Sarah) of Poway, CA grandchildren Russell (Nao), Ryan and Allison. Claire loved and enjoyed each of her eight great grandchildren. Her family has organized a private interment and memorial service which will be held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis on May 1, 2024.
