Dr. Ivor Julio Menino Furtado,
Eldest son of Antonio and Eslinda Furtado,
Left home to attend university at the age of 15. He completed 5 university degrees,
Lived in Nairobi, Kenya, Goa India, Toronto, Canada, San Diego, USA.
He worked as a professor at The University of Nairobi, a researcher in Nairobi, Bethlehem and Wales, a Science Teacher and an Assistant Principal for the Catholic School District in Toronto Canada. Ivor retired in San Diego, where he continued to live a life of adventure, traveling the globe, caring for animals and plants, growing tropical fruit trees, and growing hundreds of roses and flowers. Ivor’s yard was certified as a nature preservation area.
Above all, Ivor loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Cecilia, his daughters Ingrid and Michelle, their spouses Warren and Irwin, and his grandchildren: Mia, Sophia, Lukas, and Isabella. He is also survived by his siblings in Canada: Cynthia Castelino, Eda Caldeira, and Mervy Furtado. Ivor is predeceased by his brothers Tony Furtado and Lovet Furtado.
Ivor used his sharp wit to make others laugh. He created a warm environment of love and fun. He took utter delight in the accomplishments of those he loved - and was equally impressed if we baked a cookie or published a book. We grew strong in the warmth of his affection. We will miss him immensely. We know his spirit lives on in the natural world around us that he taught us to appreciate.
We love you, Papa Ivor.
Do Not Go Gentle
Dad fought his Alzheimer’s to the end. He may have died peacefully with medicine, but he raged bravely against the dying of the light. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation toward curing this disease.
“...And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Dylan Thomas
