Harry H. Herndon, III, 72, of Poway, California, passed away on March 30, 2021, after a long battle with lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Harry was born on June 28, 1948, to Glenna and Houston Herndon in Waynesboro, Virginia. After graduating from Fishburne Military School in 1967, he went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in political science from Randolph Macon College.
After graduation, he landed his first job working in asphalt paving, going on to own his own business, and kicking off a 46-year career in the construction industry.
In 1964, at the age of 16, Harry met Connie Metcalf, and they wed in 1971, going on to have 2 children, Ashley and Elizabeth.
Throughout his life, Harry loved nature and was avid about daily exercise, including running, biking, and hitting the speed bag. In later years, he could be found trotting along at the Poway Community Park with his trusty four-legged companion Molly; gardening; watching sports on TV; and doing crossword puzzles.
Harry was preceded in death by his mother Glenna Ross Herndon; stepmother Evelyn Herndon; and his father Harry Houston Herndon, Jr. He is survived by his wife Connie Metcalf Herndon; daughters Ashley Jones (Jaime Jones), and Elizabeth Muscat (Cory Muscat); three beloved grandchildren Cory Muscat; Nina Muscat; and Paige Jones; and sister Marsha Herquet.
