Obituary

John Louis “Jack” Garvin passed away at the La Jolla, CA Veterans Hospital on April 27th, 2023, at the age of 90 years.

He was formerly a resident of Atalissa, IA, born on June 6, 1932, and at his passing had been a resident of Valley Center, CA for the past 20 years.

Jack served in Korea with the 301st Reconnaissance Battalion as a heavy weapons infantryman during the Korean War.  He was designated as a heavy weapons platoon leader due to exemplary service and the respect he earned from his fellow soldiers.

He had many fond memories of his friends back in Iowa and most fondly remembered his time at Atalissa high school playing basketball for the Atalissa Indians and enjoying the stock car racing at the West Liberty raceway.

Jack was an avid Harley Davidson rider and was a member of the “200,000 Mile” club and rode actively until just a few years ago.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother and father, Myra Schmidt Garvin and John Frances Garvin; his Aunt Wilma Schmidt Schafnit and Uncle Bert Schafnit who raised both Jack (age 2) and Joyce (age 4) after their parent's death in 1934, sister Joyce Oepping, brother Ron Schafnit, son Terry Lee Garvin.

Jack will be missed by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will be grateful to their father, grandfather and great-grandfather for providing them all with confidence, patriotism and opportunities in life.

Jack will be interred in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton, IA. later this summer.
