Joseph Roy Merrihew passed away on December 4, 2021 at the age of 60, in Escondido, California.
His valiant battle with cancer this year showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the endless pain, Joe stayed strong until the end.
Joe was born in Syracuse, New York on April 29, 1961 to Roy and Grace Merrihew. They moved to Red Hook, New York in 1965 and it was there that Joe began his love for motocross racing. He followed his dream and moved to Escondido where he could begin his professional motocross career. Joe worked as a pressman for over 40 years at various printing companies and was very proud of the detailed work he performed. Over the years, Joe turned his competitive nature from motocross to marathon runs. He enjoyed running with his loving Dobermans, Sampson and Bleu Boy.
In October he couldn’t run, but he was determined and walked in the Rock and Roll Marathon. Joe also took up a new hobby and was learning to play the mandolin and steel guitar. He loved music and tried his best to learn his new found passion. Joe is survived by his sister, Barbara Horkan, nephew James Horkan IV, niece Caitlin Horkan and great-niece Isabella Horkan all of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
As per Joe’s wishes, he was cremated and his remains scattered in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of San Diego on December 11, 2021
