Larry Gene Woods passed away peacefully on March 17 th , 2025 surrounded by his
friends and family. Larry was born in Indiana in 1944. His family lived in Kentucky
until 1949 when they decided to vacation in San Diego. They fell in love with San
Diego and never returned to Kentucky. Larry graduated from Mission Bay High
School in 1963. Drafted into the army, he served a year in the Vietnam war in
1967. After his time in the service, he spent much of his work life working
construction and as a handyman. Some of that time was spent working with his
brother Lonny and his construction company. He was capable of doing most
anything with his hands. While looking for a place to board a horse he met the
love of his life Karen Witman. They were married in 1978. Besides Karen, Larry’s
next love was surfing which he was introduced to as a teenager and continued to
do all of his adult life. He stayed in touch with his surf buddies until the end. He
also enjoyed camping, riding Horses, and spending time with his dogs. Larry and
Karen moved to Valley Center in 1988. Larry enjoyed the rural life and the privacy
that Valley Center provides. He ultimately retired from working after being part of
the landscape maintenance crew for the Escondido Elementary School district for
12 years. His retired years were spent with Karen taking care of their home and
their animals and enjoying the company of his many friends. We will all miss
Larry’s humor, his enthusiasm for the things he loved, and for reassuring us all
that no matter the circumstance He and Karen “will be fine”.
He is survived by his wife Karen Woods of 46 years, his brother-in-law Matt
Witman and his wife Kari and their son Tom, his sister-in-law Amy Cook and her
husband Ken, and his nephew Mark Woods along with innumerable friends who
are all deeply saddened by their loss. He was proceeded in death by his parents
Robert and Georgia Woods and his brother Lonny Woods and his wife Suzie. A
burial at sea ceremony was held for Larry. It was a beautiful day on the ocean
and Larry was put to rest surrounded by family and friends and the ocean that he
loved.
