Loren “Dale” Felts, age 82, of Huntington Beach California, passed away on March 27th, 2023 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease with his daughter by his side. Dale was a kind, intelligent, and conscientious man who valued education, the natural world, pets and family. He loved a good limerick and his passion for baked goods was legendary. He will be remembered with his 35mm camera or his bird watching binoculars around his neck, and an engineer nerd pack in his front left pocket.
Dale was born on September 8th, 1940 in DuQuoin Illinois, the elder of the two sons of Loren E. and Louetta Felts (McQuaid). He was a proud alumnus of the DuQuoin Township High School class of 1958 where he was a member of the debate and speech teams. An excellent student, Dale continued his education at the University of Illinois earning a degree in physics. While still finishing his education he married his first love and high school sweetheart Barbara and became a parent to twin daughters. After completing his Bachelor’s degree Dale found gainful employment as an aerospace engineer at Philco Ford Aeroneutronic in Newport Beach, California where he spent his entire 30-year career. In California his family expanded by one with the addition of another daughter. On a canoe trip down the Klamath river Dale met his second love Peggy, his companion of 35 years.
Dale enjoyed many hobbies including photography, tennis, bicycling, canoeing, hiking/camping, playing bridge, dog walking, bird watching, and researching his father’s service in Europe during WWII. He was an avid advocate for protecting nature and was a member of The Bolsa Chica Conservancy, The Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, and The Audubon Society.
Dale is survived by his three daughters Katherine, Terry, and Karen Felts, and their mother Barbara Schaefer (Elrod). In lieu of flowers memorial donations to dementia research or any of Dale’s favorite charities are welcomed.
A reception to celebrate Dale’s life will be held on Saturday April 29th, 2023 from 5:00-8:00pm in Huntington Beach, CA. Please RSVP to tjseviltwin@yahoo.com for information.
