Marjorie Schmitt Obituary

MARJORIE J. SCHMITT Born 11-26-1924 / Passed into heaven 1-11-2022

Marjorie was born, Marjorie Jane Manypenny and raised in Chicago by Lucille and Raymond Manypenny with her 4 siblings: Raymond, Louis, Doris and Jim. Marjorie was the oldest. As a child of the depression, her family moved numerous times as her dad tried to find work as a sign painter. They often had oatmeal for each meal, which Marjorie was not fond of in later years. 3 of her siblings have previously passed on leaving Marjorie and her youngest brother Jim as the only remaining children.

Marjorie went to Morgan Park High School in south Chicago where she knew of Julius, but did not know she would one day be his wife. They would end up being married for over 74 years. Marjorie who was on the “Peppers” cheer club, would shout out the cheer “make a slit for Schmitt” at football games. After high school, they met again while working at Goodman Manufacturing Company. Marjorie was waiting for the bus one night after work when Julius drove up in his convertible and offered her a ride home. That was just the beginning of a life together. Marjorie and Julius did get married August 19, 1944, just before Julius was shipped off to World War II to serve in the US Army.

Marjorie continued to work while Julius was overseas. She was glad when he returned home having been wounded in battle by shrapnel and receiving a Purple Heart medal. After the war, Julius returned home to Marjorie and the Fred Schmitt Sr. house in south Chicago where they lived with, his sister, Lillian and husband Marvin, and his brother, Fred Schmitt Jr and wife Betty. While Julius worked as an Engineer at Western Electric, Marjorie raised a family of three children, David, Dawn, and Douglas. She also worked at the Bible Book Center, a bookstore owned by good friends. The family resided on the southwest side of Chicago. Attending Ashburn Baptist Church, where the family was very involved, Marjorie served as a deaconess and also worked many hours as the church librarian.

With her close friends, Vi and Ethel, Marjorie also was often found in the church kitchen, cooking for many various events. Music was a very large part of her life as she served at this church; seeing it grow and reach many for Christ. Choir, solos and duets were a big part of both Marjorie and Julius’s lives. After both of their sons ended up in the Southern California area, Marjorie and Julius decided to move away from the cold winters in Chicago and joined their sons in the San Diego area, moving to Temecula, CA in December 1987. This was the beginning of the second major chapter of their lives. There Marjorie and Julius discovered a brand-new ministry called Calvary Baptist Church and they became instrumental in helping to grow this ministry, serving in various areas for the last 30+ years. Once again, whether it was the church choir or the church library, the Schmitts were involved. Marjorie also led a women’s Bible Study until recently.

Marjorie will be remembered for her beautiful and elegant smile, her soprano voice, her hard-work ethic and her kind, loving, sweet spirit. Of course, Marjorie will also be known for cooking many delicious recipes for dinners and desserts. One of her family favorites at birthdays was always her yummy Poppy Seed Cake. Her favorite verse from the Bible was .... “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3

Marjorie is survived by her brother Jim, three children; David, daughter-in-law Sherri Schmitt, Dawn Johnson and Douglas Schmitt; grandchildren Dylan Johnson and his wife Lizzie; Thia, Kristopher and his wife Cassandra Schmitt; Dustin and his wife Kara Schmitt; Derek and his wife Nancy Schmitt. Great-grandchildren include Thomas, Rhylee, Taelynn, Austin, and Wyatt Johnson, Madison and Thomas Schmitt, and Mia and Avery Schmitt.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made to the Calvary Baptist Church-Temecula in her memory.

Interment will be on February 14th at Miramar National Cemetery at 1:30 pm. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church-Temecula. Contact the family at dms53@pacbell.net for more information
