Mike Skarra Obituary

Mike Patrick Skarra, 71, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones on December 06, 2023, after a brave battle with Parkinson's and Lewy Body Disease.

Mike was born on November 03, 1952, in Washington state on the Yakima Indian Reservation. He was the sixth child of eight children born to Perry Eino Skarra and Rozelle "Dolly" Skarra.

Mike started his life in the Pacific Northwest and spent most of his childhood in Portland, Oregon, before moving to Alexandria, Virginia, and graduating from Fort Hunt High School. In 1974, after completing college, Mike moved to Vista, CA, with his pregnant wife and young son to be near his family.

Mike called Vista, California, home over the past 50 years, raising his kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren. With his gift of gab and love for people, Mike excelled in his 40-year sales career working with Military Commissaries. Mike was quick-witted, personable, and enjoyed being the master of ceremonies at a party, family gathering, or work event.

Mike had many favorite things: family, grandkids, friends, coaching softball and baseball, Hawaiian shirts, Christmas, and enjoying life's simple pleasures. Everyone who knew Mike knew he loved going to the beach, hanging out there, and thinking we should have our toes in the sand next to him. He explored the beautiful Hawaiian Islands with friends and enjoyed countless weekends at our local beaches with his loved ones, creating unforgettable memories.

Mike's true passion was coaching softball and baseball. He coached his children, grandchildren, and friends' children for 40 years with Vista Girls Softball. He also took a travel team to Japan and Oahu in the early 1990s. He loved to "talk softball strategy" with anyone who would listen. Vista's perfect weather allowed him to wear his favorite outfit year-round - Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and flip-flops. During Christmas, he wore his head-to-toe Santa Claus outfit to his grandchildren’s delight. He enjoyed being the “official” Santa roasting the ALA So. CA chapter attendees and supporting our troops at their Holiday events.  It's worth mentioning that, for once, Mike would ditch his typical shorts attire and opt for pants to complete the actual effect of being Santa. Mike would want us to honor his memory by cherishing the simple pleasures he loved the most - basking in the warmth of the beach, donning vibrant Hawaiian shirts, relishing a cold beer, marveling at the radiant moon above, and savoring the company of loved ones and friends.

Mike is survived by his four children: Dustin (Dana) Skarra, Crystal Guest (Chris), Jason (Grace) Skarra, and Amber (Rick) Coffman. Additionally, he is survived by his longtime partner Kathy and her children Tony (Monica), Michelle (Rhett), Bucky (Kelly) and his eleven grandchildren:  Steven, Tia, Daniel, Jarred, Maverick, Gunnar, Aaliyah, Alyssa, Savanna, Brayden, Avarie and two great-grandchildren, Margo and Ace. He leaves behind his brothers David and Stuart, his sisters Suzanne and Terese, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Rozelle; his brothers, John and Paul; his sister, Mary; his daughter, Rose; and niece, Bridget Skarra.
