Thomas P. Baumann was born November 18,1951 to Robert Anthony Baumann and Nell Miriam Mainor in Upland, California. Tom grew up in Upland attending St. Joseph’s Elementary School and then Damian High School. He graduated from USD with a BA in Psychology and pursued an MS in Psychology at Kansas State. He returned to California in 1976 and obtained an MBA from SDSU and then his CPA beginning his public accounting career at Coopers and Lybrand. Tom practiced in public accounting until his retirement in 2009.
Tom is survived by his wife Lorraine and son Jonathan (Aimee) of St Cloud, MN, Lisa of Phoenix and his much beloved grandchildren, Kennedy, Asher, Weston and Teagan. He is also survived by his brother Bob of Ashland, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom met Lorraine in kindergarten under the watchful eye of Tom’s Mom Nell who was the teacher. The relationship didn’t bloom until a few years after college when they reconnected at a mutual friend’s wedding. They were married in 1979. They made a home in La Mesa, then moved to San Diego and eventually to Poway.
Tom treasured his time with family. Some of his happiest memories were having the grandchildren on his lap as he read them stories. Tom’s love of reading was shared with his children and grandchildren. He was fond of telling stories. He would tease the kids with tales like spaghetti grew on trees, etc. He made it a point to take his family on many vacations, something that he had missed as a child. One of his favorites was our trip to Seattle.
When Tom retired, he took up woodworking. He made beautiful ring boxes, jewelry boxes and tooth fairy boxes, some of which he sold on Etsy. He spent many happy hours working in the garage on the projects. Tom also enjoyed volunteer work. He spent many years helping at a local food bank, boy scouts and helping family and friends.
We used to tease Tom about his spreadsheets. You could count on Tom to have a spreadsheet for whichever activity there was, travel checklists, sprinkler cycles, home finance, etc. He could be seen busy at the computer wearing his favorite Padre’s hat.
There will be a service for Tom in St Cloud, MN June 24th and one in Poway on August 19th at 10 am at St. Gabriel’s Church, Poway.
