Ulric “Rick” Everard Aeria, aged 73, passed away on October 27, 2024, in San Diego, CA. Born on July 30, 1951in Malacca, Malaysia. Rick's life was marked by his deep devotion to his family, his passion for chess, and a distinguished career that blended military service with professional achievements in various fields.
After attending La Salle Elementary School in Kuala Lumpur and National Type (English) Secondary and High School in Petaling Jaya. Rick was an “A” student and was always placed in the “A” classes. He furthered his education at Vanto Pre-University Academy, San Diego Mesa College, and San Diego State University. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his multifaceted career.
Rick served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1974 as a Personnel Specialist. His service was characterized by dedication and excellence, attributes that he carried into his civilian life. Following his military service, Rick transitioned into the IT sector, where he worked as an IT Manager for Sheraton Hotels and later as an IT Assistant at The Doctor's Clinic. He also shared his love for chess as a Chess Instructor at Chess Academy.
An avid chess player throughout his life, Rick’s prowess on the chessboard was well recognized. He played for the U.S. Army chess team, won the Eighth Army tournament, and was awarded a special trophy for the "most single brilliant game." He remained an active member of the San Diego Chess Club.
Rick's hobbies were as diverse as his career. In his younger years, he was the secretary of the Judo Club, captain of the water-polo team, a cricket and volleyball player, and an editor for his school magazine. He also served as a lifeguard, showcasing his leadership and commitment to community safety.
Rick is survived by his sisters Ursula and Michele; sister in law, Diana; his children, Warren and Laura; son in law, Carlos; and his grandchildren, Gabrielle and Micah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Wendy, and his brother, Bob.
A Funeral Mass will be held for Rick at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church in San Diego, CA, on December 4, 2024, at 11 am. His burial will take place at Miramar National Cemetery on December 6, 2024, at 1:30 pm.
Rick’s legacy of love, service, and intellect will forever be cherished by those who knew him. His life was a testament to the enduring power of dedication and passion.
