Vilma Colon Obituary

Vilma Estrella Colón, August 7, 1945 - September 17, 2021, was welcomed with loving arms into her next chapter by her adoring parents, Flores and Maria Colón. Vilma was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico and was raised in an Air Force family that relocated every 2 to 3 years. This lifestyle fueled her lifelong love of adventure, travel and cultivating new connections everywhere she went.

One of her favorite pastimes was bringing family, friends and new acquaintances together through vacations, experiences, small and large gatherings, food, happy hours, love and laughter. Vilma was the life of the party and had a way of making everyone who crossed her path feel special. Referred to often as The Energizer Bunny, a spitfire, The Roadrunner, a spark plug, The Tazmanian Devil, and a pistol, Vilma was teased about her assertion that she was “always right.”

She memorialized this phrase on the license plate of her first sports car. Although she had a very successful federal government career, Vilma’s high emotional intelligence quotient and her entrepreneurial spirit led her to launch a lucrative human resources consulting business. Vilma also had an artistic eye and immersed herself in everything from having a side business in Native American art and jewelry, to creating an Instagram account with photos of street murals she found while traveling, to making intricate handmade stockings for her immediate family members. She was meticulous about taking photos, exploring her family genealogy, and creating photo books so that she could share memories with others.

For the past several years, Vilma was unable to travel by airplane and relished taking joy rides in her husband’s restored 1965 red convertible Triumph Spitfire and road trips in their Casita. Vilma battled a cancer diagnosis for 14 years and to call her a fighter is an understatement. She is survived by her doting husband, James Jones; her three children, Marchelle Thomson, Darren Klein and Loren Klein; her daughter-in-laws, Carol Klein and Kristen Leary; and her eight grandchildren, Camryn, Morgan, Evangeline, Hunter, Liev, Neko, Juniper and Penelope, who called her Mita.

As in life, Vilma wanted her memorial event to be a celebration of life amongst close family and friends.
