William “Bill” Louis Hoese, age 86 of Escondido, California died at home following a prolonged illness on November 17, 2023. He was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Maurice Porter Hoese and Bernice Jeanette (Parks) Hoese. On September 26, 1959, he married Elinor Diane (Romero) Hoese in Carmel By The Sea, California. Together they shared 64 years of marriage. Bill leaves behind his children, William “Skip” (Stephannie Pugh-Hoese) Hoese, Michael (Bonnie) Hoese, Erin (Jeffrey) Baehr, and James (Amanda Delwiche) Hoese, and his 9 grandchildren, Frances (Jacob) Vornholt, Lauren Baehr, Grace Hoese, Lucas Baehr, L Hoese, Riley Apra, Micah Hoese, Evan Baehr, and Cody Hoese.
Bill grew up in North Park, and played football at San Diego High School. He was then active in Air Force ROTC and made life-long friends with his brotherhood in Sigma Chi fraternity at San Diego State University. He served active duty as an intelligence officer in the Air Force for 5 years, earning the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He was discharged from active duty and resumed his studies, graduating from the Bolt Law School at UC Berkeley in 1966. He joined the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton and Scripps in 1966, was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1967, and became a partner at the firm, practicing with a focus on mergers and acquisitions. He was a founding member of the San Diego County Bar Foundation, which provides San Diego’s underserved access to life-changing legal services and education. After retiring from Luce, Forward, he became general counsel at American Tool Companies, Inc. in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Bill and Diane returned to San Diego in 2002 and Bill became general counsel to Cubic Corporation until falling ill in 2011.
Bill had a passion for his family and friends. He loved getting his kids out of bed at the crack of dawn on Sunday mornings to go water skiing on San Diego Bay or Mission Bay. He thoroughly enjoyed boating; a fondly remembered trip involved motoring Desolation Sound, British Columbia. Bill was a member of the Kona Kai Club and the San Diego Yacht Club. He loved snow skiing, tinkering on his work bench, having lunch with friends, and getting together with family.
